This is not the first attempt to build the Next-Generation Network (NGN). Back in the 1980s, when the carriers controlled innovation, they had come up with a wonderfully complex architecture for voice, data, and video services, called the Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (Broadband ISDN). This architecture was layered upon a standard protocol called ATM—Asynchronous Transfer Mode—and those 53-byte cells were deceptively simple. All the real complexity was in the multiple adaptation layers, which allowed very different services to be successfully adapted to and carried by the relatively uncomplicated ATM transport layer, and in the signaling required to make, manage, and tear-down connections.
At a Chamber of Commerce Business Card Exchange several years ago a
well-dress woman walked up to me, business card in hand and, in perfect
form held it in both hands in front of me, gesturing for me to take it.
I took the card from her and smiled. She looked up and in a polite
voice, said "Thank you," and walked away. How sad. Here was this
obviously well-intentioned woman, who most likely owned an interesting
business but never learned what to do at a card exchange. Somewhere she
bought into the idea that you were suppose to hand out as many business
cards in as little time as possible. Clearly, this does nothing but
waste business cards. Great for card businesses, not so great for yours.
Forums, groups, boards, and loops; they’re all synonymous for online
locations facilitating online networking. Some are entirely public,
where everyone and anyone can click to the URL, read the messages and
if they have no interest in contributing, they can just lurk. Some
require active participation and others require registration before
members can participate. These online forums, groups, boards or loops
are different from paid membership sites in that there is no cost to
network at these websites.
Information about how to give an overview of your business without putting listeners to sleep.
Entrepreneurs with businesses in early start-up differ on what they
believe to be the most important element, although many professionals
will argue that creating a solid business plan should definitely be the
first step. A well-crafted business plan lays out all the details and
strategies, includes projections for revenue and spending, and will be
reviewed in detail by bankers and venture capitalists. But in fact, the
most important document that should be created even before the business
plan is the “elevator pitch.”
Remember
that most good people generally enjoy helping others when you make it
easy for them. When you ask the people inside your circle of influence
to help you by referring new clients, you're helping yourself, you're
helping them by enabling them to help you, and you're helping the
potential clients by providing a quality product or service that they
need.
As business owners or managers we often find it difficult, even in the
best of situations to get out and seek new business. You've probably
thought that if you could just find a way to squeeze that into your day
without spending more time away from your family or working weekends,
you'd be all set, right? Guess what? You can and all that it's going to
take is a little preparation.
When
used wisely and appropriately, networking is one of your most
cost-effective business building tools. But, don't approach it as a
method to sell. Networking is the process of creating relationships
where you can help others achieve their goals, and they can help you
achieve yours.
It's
one of the most important marketing tools you can have in your toolbox.
Are you prepared with a crisp, concise, and powerful statement to
introduce yourself at that next networking function, or to answer the
question, "what do you do?"
I have been trying to think about how I can talk about this subject and
address it in a way that would be fair and balanced without injecting
too much personal opinion and have decided to first talk about the
types of groups and then later on be more specific. It is important to
remember that you will have preferences that may not align with mine,
but that each of us share a common goal in our networking. More
business and possibly more friends. So lets begin by analyzing the various types of groups. There are many
different types of groups, but it is easier to categorize them by the
meeting format rather than using individual categories like chambers of
commerce or women's groups.
In "On Networking Groups - Part One", I spoke briefly about the four
types of networking groups. Now, let's take a look at a category of
networking groups. One category that most people are familiar with is the Chamber Of
Commerce. Chambers serve a long standing role in the business
community. It is a role of development and support. A Chamber Of
Commerce can offer business both small and large with networking
opportunities, training programs, legislative assistance and a host of
other benefits. A Chamber Of Commerce can be a local, statewide,
national, or international organization with separate memberships for
each. If you belong to an area Chamber of Commerce, you do not belong
to a state or national Chamber. Each plays their own role in the
business community.
I am about to share with you something that I talk to people about a lot. It is focused networking. In each business, we have a target market or the perfect prospect. If
you have been in a particular business for any length of time, you
should know what type of person or business owner falls into this
category for you. If not, it is time to figure out who this might be.
What is a leads group? Leads groups seem to be the most popular form of
networking judging that comment by the fact that there are more leads
groups in existence that have been around for a long time than most
other types of groups. Leads groups are often referred to as closed groups. This means that
there can only be one type of a business represented in a group. Lets
say that I am a web designer. In a closed group I would be the only web
designer represented in the group. Other web designers would be allowed
to visit, but if they wanted to join the organization they would have
to find a group that did not have a web designer. If there was no
opening in an existing group for a web designer, the person would have
to go on a waiting list until an opening became available, or a new
group was formed.
Online networking web sites. Are they really networking and are they really working? They have been springing up all over. They are based on contact
management. They are direct in messaging, emailing, and even in the six
degrees of separation. They go by many different names and have various
methods of finding people. The problem with these sites is that they
are not really networking. Do you disagree?
Networking
is a popular buzzword these days. Every blogger seems to be talking
about Networking, Buzz Marketing and Word of Mouth Marketing. However,
not many of them seem to be presenting specific strategies for making
the most of local networking groups. This is why I decided to write
this article.
Have you ever been at a networking function talking to someone when
during the conversation you felt very self-conscious trying to say the
right thing? Were you afraid that maybe if you said the wrong thing the
person might not find you likeable, and therefore not want to do
business with you? If you have, I am about to tell you why you should
not worry about it. Like the obnoxious song "Don't Worry - Be Happy"
from years ago, I want to share with you the reason why being careful
about what we say works against us in the networking environment.
It is often said that it is not who you know that matters, it is who
knows you. Well I would like to extend this statement by saying that it
is not only who you know and who knows you, but how well do you know
them and they you?
Have you ever had someone get right up in your face when they are
talking to you? So close in fact that a letter "S' results in an
unwanted shower? Often when we are out networking, we find ourselves in
a loud environment as people try to talk louder to be heard over people
trying to talk louder to be heard. This results in a roar that makes
regular conversation difficult.
The last couple of days have been beautiful, the weather near perfect
and some of us are suffering from spring fever while others are simply
struggling with the pollen levels. This time of the year reminds me
that summer is coming and things are about to slow down – in
networking. I would like to take just a moment and discuss this trend
and what I believe may be the cause of it.
As a working mom, you may already feel overwhelmed, juggling dual
responsibilities of work and family. When it comes to networking – yet
another task – you may feel that “the time I’ve spent at networking has
never really paid off.” Creating a personal and professional network is essential for your work
+ life success. That’s why working moms need to approach networking
with a different paradigm, explained below as a three-part process.
We all make use of traditional forms of getting new business in –
advertising, direct mail, brochures etc but networking is one form of
marketing which, has been under-utilised. Until now that is. Small
business owners are finally beginning to under stand the power of
networking and what it can do for their sales figures. But what is networking?
