In
the eightfold path of Yoga as laid out by the sage Patanjali, the
foundations are "Yama and Niyama", the "do's and don't's" of spiritual
life, without which the structure of Yogic success will not stand. And
one of the most important of these is satya, truthfulness, honesty.
Read on to see how important this really is.
Ahimsa: non-violence, non-injury, harmlessness In his commentary on the Yoga Sutras, Vyasa [Vyasa was one of the
greatest sages of India, author of the Mahabharata (which includes the
Bhagavad Gita), the Brahma Sutras, and the codifier of the Vedas.]
begins his exposition of ahimsa: "Ahimsa means in no way and at no time
to do injury to any living being." Shankara expands on this, saying
that ahimsa is "in no capacity and in no fashion to give injury to any
being." This would include injury by word or thought as well as the
obvious injury perpetrated by deed, for Shankara further says: "Ahimsa
is to be practiced in every capacity-body, speech, and mind." We find
this principle being set forth by Jesus in his claim that anger
directed toward someone is a form of murder (Matthew 5:21,22), and by
the Beloved Disciple's statement that hatred is also murder.(I John
3:15)
Prerequisites for yoga
"Knowledge (Jnana) does not come about from practice of yoga methods
alone. Perfection in knowledge is in fact only for those who begin by
practice of virtue (dharma). Yet, without yoga as a means, knowledge does not come about. The practice of yogic methods is not the means by itself, yet it is
only out of that practice of yoga that the perfection in knowledge
comes about. And so it is said by the teachers: 'Yoga is for the
purpose of knowledge of truth'" Thus wrote Shankara.
One of the amazing things about yoga is that despite the great benefits
that it produces, it requires no costs. There is not specific yoga
training equipment that one has to use in order to obtain the desired
results and there is no such thing as the perfect environment required
for practicing yoga.
You want to have a full life. You want to feel well. You want lots of energy, vitality, power, and stamina. Am I right so far? Well, the great news is that all these can be yours. Yoga applies
age-old secrets to everyday life in a modern, fast-paced world. Its
practical application can restore your lost youth, put new zest into
your every step, and empower you to fully enjoy a sense of health,
energy and creative living. All this will do wonders for your future
happiness...
Chair
Yoga can easily work in harmony with most physical rehabilitation
prescriptions. Many physical therapists have knowledge of Yoga or are
teachers of Yoga. Many doctors, physical therapists, and medical
professionals recommend Yoga to patients who are making a “come back.”
Flexibility is considered to be a “by product” of Yoga practice, but in
the case of Chair Yoga, it is often “down played” or taken for granted.
Since most Chair Yoga enthusiasts are seniors, the true value of
flexibility is mobility. When you consider that mobility for seniors can be the difference
between dependence and independence, flexibility is now of extreme
value.
The following is an observation I have made after working with groups
from assisted living complexes, adult day care centers, nursing homes,
and seniors centers. The average mobile senior citizen is much more
flexible in the hips, spine, wrists, and shoulders, than his or her
dependent counterpart.
In
comparison to many forms of exercise, the benefits of Chair Yoga far
outweigh the risks. The therapeutic exercises work the body, from head
to toes, to the best of any client’s ability.
In
order to be successful in life, we have to accept the fact that
everything around us changes, all the time. Once you have reached the
point where you can accept, it is time to adapt to the world around you.
At this point, let’s break down the major components of a typical Hatha
Yoga session, and see how each one will enable you to reach your goals.
There are nine main styles of Yoga in India, but most of the popular
styles, outside of India, are variations of Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga
classes tend, among other things, to emphasize physical mastery.
Time
is valuable and there are a number of successful methods for goal
realization. Yoga will cross train your mind and body for maximum
potential. Imagine being able to optimize your attitude in one hour,
per day, or less. Every day, people attend Yoga classes for physical or mental health,
and walk away with the tools, to be masters of their own destiny.
Finally,
some of the “Yoga and Weight Loss” studies have come in, and even, a
little bit of Yoga is much better, than none, for weight control, but
there are a number of reasons why.
There
is an interesting article in the September 5th issue of Time magazine.
This particular article covers a spectrum of opinions about mixing
Christianity with Yoga. Even, if you don’t agree with a single opinion,
it’s a good read, as long as you remain objective.
If
you are continually staying awake over trivial matters, these solutions
will aid you to get a good night’s rest. Remember - not every solution
will work for everyone, so try the easiest ideas and make them fit into
your lifestyle.
I
laughed at his rhetoric, equally, as much as watching Jerry Seinfeld or
Ray Ramano, do a stand up comedy routine. The man is pure entertainment
and he has a point.
Here are some guidelines and realistic expectations for parents, who
are considering Yoga for their children. For your child, Yoga is much
more than a kid's fitness class. Just like adults -- kids need time to
learn to deal with life's daily pressures, too.
Learn the secrets of cultivating positive energy. Most of us who study Yoga have been taught that an abundance of Prana
(vital air or vital energy), can be found at the ocean, lakes, large
open fields, and in the mountains.
Yoga consists of many facets; Asanas is just one of the many parts of Yoga. Experienced Yoga practitioners often feel discouraged when a naturally
gifted dancer, gymnast, or martial artist, performs an advanced asana
with little effort. As I have mentioned before, there are people with
elongated joint capsules and their extraordinary range of motion is a
gift. You and I may have to work at it, but the many rewards of Yoga
practice are still there.
Here are some secrets to how to teacher Yoga. What you are about to read applies to teaching, in general. In fact, we
are all teachers, to some degree. You teach your friends, co-workers,
strangers and family members on a daily basis.
